What you get

A 3D printable head made from one photo of a person or a pet, as a smooth cartoon likeness with the expression you pick, ready as a bust, a keychain or ornament, a fridge magnet, a can holder, a planter, a bobblehead or a mini figure. Download it as an STL, or as a 3MF with the colours already painted on for a multi-colour printer.

How it works

  1. Upload a clear photo, the face looking straight at the camera. Add up to three more from the side or the back if you have them.
  2. Pick who it is, colour or grey, an expression and, if you like, a hat.
  3. Check the clay version: the 3D head is built from this picture, so make it again until it looks like them.
  4. Build the 3D head, then pick what to make from it and size it in real millimetres.
  5. Fine-tune if you need to: turn and tilt the head, move the can or the loop, repaint a colour, sculpt a spot, or let the print fixes fill overhangs and gaps.
  6. Download, slice and print.

Your photo and credits

The photo is sent to our AI partner fal.ai to make the clay picture and the 3D model, and it is never stored. The clay picture and the head stay in My heads under your account until you delete them. Only use photos of yourself or of someone who said yes. The clay picture is made by AI and is marked that way.

The example run is free and works before you sign in. New accounts get 38 free credits, enough for two colour heads (19 each; a grey one takes 9).

Common questions

How do I turn a photo into a 3D printable head?

Upload a clear photo looking straight at the camera, pick who it is (a person or a pet) and an expression. The tool first makes a clay version of the face as a picture; when it looks like them, it builds the 3D head from it. Then pick what to make from it (a bust, a keychain, a magnet, a can holder and more) and download an STL or a painted 3MF.

What photo works best?

One sharp photo, the face looking straight at the camera, evenly lit, nothing covering it. Up to three more photos from the side or the back help the hair and the profile. Sunglasses, hands in front of the face and heavy shadows make the likeness worse.

Can I print the head in colour?

Yes. Pick colour in the wizard and the download is a 3MF with the colours painted on, which Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer open ready for an AMS or any multi-material printer. The page shows which filament goes in which slot, and you can repaint any part with the brush first.

What does it cost?

The example run is free and works before you sign in. Your own heads use credits: new accounts get 38 free credits, enough for two colour heads (19 each; a grey one takes 9), and a new clay version of the same photo costs 1. A build that fails costs nothing, and a head you are not happy with can be redone for free within a day if you have not downloaded it (three times a month).

Is my photo stored?

No. The photo is resized in your browser and sent to our AI partner fal.ai, which makes the clay picture and the 3D model, and it is never written to our storage. The clay picture and the 3D head are kept under your account so you can download them again, until you delete them. Only use photos of yourself or of someone who said yes.

Will an open-mouthed laugh print?

Yes. A laugh or a surprised face used to come out with a deep hole behind the lips that no nozzle reaches. The tool now fills it to a shallow recess, so the teeth and lips keep their shape and nothing prints deeper than a millimetre and a half.

What filament and settings should I use?

PLA at 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers prints faces best. Print busts and heads standing up. The tool closes narrow gaps in the hair and fills open mouths on its own; the print check shows any overhang under the chin, and one click fills it so it prints without supports. Magnets and name plates print flat on their back.

Can I make a silicone mold of the head?

Yes. Use "Use in a mold generator" under the preview to send the head straight into the silicone mold maker, then cast it in wax, soap, plaster or resin.
