The sheet of a frozen lake broken into angular floes about 6 to 15 mm across, each one flat and a little higher or lower than the next, with narrow cracks between them, finer hairline cracks inside, and an impact point where cracks radiate out like a star. Roll it into air-dry clay, polymer clay or heat-softened EVA foam for frozen rivers, ice caves and winter battlefields, and for snow and ice bases for 28 and 32 mm miniatures, or into porcelain for wintry trays and coasters.

Made with our free texture roller tool in its Rolling pin style, not modelled by hand: we drew the pattern in code as a seamless picture, uploaded it, and set a sleeve 40 mm across and 100 mm long, the pattern raised 1.5 mm and repeated three times round and twice along. The zip holds the texture sleeve and the tool's own two rolling-pin handles, as two STL files, plus the pattern picture, so you can remake the sleeve at another diameter or depth.

Every sleeve in this set slides onto the same two handles: the core, 202 mm long overall, a handle with a 30 mm tube, and a cap that locks on with a quarter turn. Print the handles once, and after that only sleeves.

What you need

  • About 128 g of PLA or PETG for the sleeve and both handles (about 33 g for a sleeve alone)
  • Something to texture: air-dry or polymer clay, EVA foam warmed with a heat gun, or pottery clay
  • A printer that can print 207 mm tall: the core handle stands 202 mm on the bed
  • A little cornstarch, or a water spray for pottery clay, if it starts to stick

How to use it

  1. Print the sleeve and both handles standing on their ends, as exported, no supports. A 5 mm brim keeps the tall core steady.

  2. Slide the sleeve over the core's tube, push the cap on with its slots over the two lugs and turn it a quarter turn to lock.

  3. Roll the clay or foam to an even thickness first: 3 to 5 mm for walls, floors and terrain tiles, 1.5 to 2 mm for miniature bases.

  4. Roll across once, in one direction, with steady, even pressure, and lift off at the end. Going back and forth doubles the pattern.

  5. Turn the cap back to swap to another sleeve from the set, and wash the sleeve in warm soapy water after use.

Questions about this design

How do I make the cracked ice textured rolling pin look like real ice?

Paint the floes a pale blue, darken the cracks with a deep blue wash, and drybrush white over the edges of every floe. Finish with two coats of gloss varnish or a thin layer of clear resin so the surface shines like wet ice.

Can I make ice bases for miniatures with the cracked ice textured rolling pin?

Yes. Roll polymer or air-dry clay about 1.5 mm thick, texture it, and punch or cut discs to fit 25, 32 or 40 mm bases. The floes are big enough that each base shows a few cracks, so a squad of models all standing on ice still look different.

Does the cracked ice textured rolling pin fit the same handles as the other sleeves?

Yes. Every sleeve in this set is 100 mm long with a 30.6 mm bore, and every zip carries the same core and cap, so you print the handles once and swap sleeves with a quarter turn of the cap. They also fit handles printed from the texture roller tool itself.

How long does the cracked ice textured rolling pin take to print?

About 5 h 10 min for everything on a current printer at 0.2 mm layers: about 1 h 20 min for the sleeve and 3 h 50 min for both handles. Once you have the handles, each new sleeve is only the first part. The times are estimated from the parts' volume, not sliced.
