3D render of a purple honeycomb mesh drop shaped Christmas bauble with a hanging hole at its tip, in front of the orange and blue press that forms it
Print only ~88 g

A drop-shaped Christmas bauble you print flat: two honeycomb nets that you warm and press into halves, then push together on the pins round the rim. It closes into a hollow drop 71 mm wide, 100 mm tall and about 70 mm deep, with a 3 mm hole at its tip for a thread, a ribbon or an ornament hook.

Made with our mesh former, the same ball press as our mesh Christmas ornament with another net. Each net prints in about 24 minutes with no supports and weighs about 6.6 g. The drop is the same on its left and right, so one press, a plug and a cavity printed once, forms the front and the back half and as many ornaments as you like.

Hang it next to the mesh ball for a mixed tree, or print a few in silk gold and purple like old glass drops. The zip has both nets, the plug, the cavity, a print sheet and the outline as an SVG for the mesh former.

Shown as a 3D render of the closed ornament in front of the press, not a photo.

How it is made

What you need

3
  • About 13 g of PETG or PLA per ornament, and 75 g of PLA once for the press
  • A heat gun, or a hair dryer on its hottest setting
  • Thread, ribbon or an ornament hook, and a drop of glue if you want it closed for good

How to make it

5
  1. Print the front net, the back net, the plug and the cavity, all flat on the bed.

  2. Lay the front net in the cavity's pocket, flat face down, so the small locator pins go through the holes in its rim.

  3. Warm it with the heat gun kept moving 15 to 20 cm away until it goes limp. Turn the plug over side to side, like the page of a book (its left edge goes to the right, its top stays at the top), push it straight down and hold it for a minute while it cools.

  4. Do the same with the back net in the same press.

  5. Put the halves rim to rim and press the printed pins of the front into the holes of the back. Thread the string through the hole at the tip.

Questions about this design

Which way up does the mesh drop bauble hang?

Point up: the hanging hole is in the narrow tip, so the round end hangs at the bottom like a raindrop about to fall. Thread the ribbon through the hole and it hangs straight, since the drop is the same on both sides.

Can I put a light inside the mesh drop bauble?

Yes. It is hollow and about 70 mm deep, so a coin-cell LED or a fairy light bulb fits before you close the halves. The honeycomb lets the light out on every side.

Can I make the mesh drop bauble in another size?

Yes. Open the mesh former and drop the SVG from the zip on it, then change the size; the depth comes down with it and the tool warns you if the net would stretch too thin. The hanging hole stays 3 mm and needs the solid tip, so keep it.
