Where an Etsy sale goes

On a 25 item with 5 shipping, a US shop pays 0.20 to list it, 1.95 in transaction fee (6.5% of the whole 30, shipping included) and 1.15 to process the payment. That is 3.30, or 11% of what the buyer paid, before a single cost of your own. If the buyer came through an Offsite Ad, add another 4.50.

The figure that surprises people is the Offsite Ads fee. Etsy charges it on any order a buyer places within 30 days of clicking one of its ads elsewhere, and at 15% it can take most of the profit on a low-priced item. Tick the box above to see your worst case, and price so that an ad-driven sale still makes money.

Pricing so the margin survives

Set the margin you want and the calculator finds the lowest item price that reaches it with every fee, your costs and the returns allowance counted. Margin here means profit as a share of what the buyer pays. Your own time is a cost too: if you have not put it into the piece cost, the margin is what pays you for it.

Selling what you make from Meshcast molds or files needs commercial rights, which come with Pro and Founder. Free use is personal only; the licence page has the details.

Questions

What fees does Etsy charge on a sale?

A 0.20 USD listing fee (charged again each time a unit of a multi-quantity listing sells), a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping, and a payment processing fee that depends on your country: 3% + $0.25 in the US, 4% + £0.20 in the UK, 4% + €0.30 in the EU. Some countries add a regulatory operating fee, and a sale that came through an Offsite Ad costs 12 to 15% more.

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The 6.5% transaction fee, the payment processing fee and the Offsite Ads fee are all charged on the order total, which includes the shipping the buyer pays. Free shipping does not avoid the fee, it only moves the postage into the item price, where it is charged the same.

How do Etsy Offsite Ads fees work?

When a buyer clicks one of Etsy's ads on another site and buys within 30 days, Etsy charges 15% of the order total if your shop made under 10,000 USD in the last 12 months, or 12% above that. The fee is capped at 100 USD per order. Under 10,000 USD you can opt out; above it you cannot.

What is not included?

Sales tax and VAT, which Etsy collects and pays over in most markets; Etsy Ads (the on-site ads you pay per click); the one-off shop setup fee; and shipping labels bought through Etsy, which you can enter as postage. Fees outside the US are converted from USD at an approximate rate, so treat a few cents of difference as rounding.
