Heart mesh dish

A 110 mm honeycomb heart dish for rings and keys. Print it flat, warm it, press it into shape.

A heart shaped dish, 110 mm wide and 20 mm deep, with a honeycomb net and a solid rim. It sits on its wide, gently curved bottom and holds rings, earrings, keys or sweets, and it makes a quick handmade gift.

Made with our mesh former. The net prints flat in about 70 minutes, with no supports. Warm it with a heat gun or a hair dryer, lay it in the printed cavity and push the plug down on it, and it keeps the dish shape once it cools. The press is printed once, so a second heart in another colour costs one more net.

The zip has the net, the plug, the cavity, a print sheet and the heart outline as an SVG, which you can drop on the mesh former to make it bigger, deeper or with another net pattern.

What you need

  • About 9 g of PETG or PLA for the net, and 80 g of PLA once for the press
  • A heat gun, or a hair dryer on its hottest setting
  • Heat resistant gloves, or a folded towel to press the plug with

How to make it

  1. Print the net, the plug and the cavity flat on the bed.
  2. Lay the net in the cavity's pocket, flat face down, so the small pins go through the holes in its rim.
  3. Warm the net with the heat gun kept moving 15 to 20 cm away, until it goes limp. Keep the heat off the rim.
  4. Push the plug straight down into the cavity and hold it for about a minute while the net cools.
  5. Lift the plug and take the dish out.

Questions about this design

Will small earrings fall through the heart dish?

Studs and rings stay put: the cells are about 5 mm across and the net stretches a little in the middle, so a stud earring lies across them. For very fine chains or tiny studs, drop the outline on the mesh former and make the cells smaller, down to 3 mm.

Why is the heart dish curved and not flat bottomed?

A dome draws the net evenly all the way round. A flat floor needs steep walls, and on a heart those walls pull the net into long thin struts at the point and in the dip. The curve is gentle enough that the dish sits still.

Can I make the heart dish as a gift with a name on it?

The net itself cannot carry text, but the rim can take a paint pen, and a small printed name tag glued to the rim works well. Or print the net in a colour that means something to them: it takes one more 9 g net per heart.
