An Easter egg you print flat: two honeycomb nets that you warm and press into halves, then push together on the pins round the rim. It closes into a hollow egg 63 mm wide, 63 mm deep and 92 mm tall with its tab, and the tab on top has a 3 mm hole for a ribbon, so it hangs on an Easter tree or a branch in a vase.

Made with our mesh former. Each net prints in about 55 minutes, with no supports, and weighs about 6 g. The press is printed once and makes both halves, because the egg is symmetric, so a whole tree of eggs costs one net pair each.

Print it in pastel PLA or PETG, or each half in a different colour. The zip has both nets, the plug, the cavity, a print sheet and the outline as an SVG you can drop on the mesh former to change the size or the net pattern.

What you need

  • About 12 g of PETG or PLA per egg, and 60 g of PLA once for the press
  • A heat gun, or a hair dryer on its hottest setting
  • Ribbon or thread for hanging, and a drop of glue if you want it closed for good

How to make it

  1. Print the front net, the back net, the plug and the cavity, all flat on the bed.

  2. Lay the front net in the cavity's pocket, flat face down, so the small pins go through the holes in its rim.

  3. Warm it with the heat gun kept moving 15 to 20 cm away until it goes limp, push the plug straight down and hold it for a minute while it cools.

  4. Do the same with the back net in the same press.

  5. Put the halves rim to rim and press the pins of the front into the holes of the back. Tie a ribbon through the hole in the tab.

Questions about this design

Can I fill the mesh Easter egg with sweets?

Yes, with anything bigger than the 5 mm cells: foil wrapped mini chocolate eggs, jelly beans or a small toy. Keep the sweets wrapped, because a printed net is not food safe, and leave the pins unglued so the egg opens again on Easter morning.

How do I hang the mesh Easter egg on an Easter tree?

Thread a ribbon or a doubled cotton thread through the 3 mm hole in the tab on top and tie it to a branch. The egg weighs about 12 g, so even thin twigs of forsythia or pussy willow in a vase hold it without bending.

Can I paint the mesh Easter egg?

Acrylic paint and paint pens take well on the rim and the tab, and a light coat of spray paint colours the whole net. The easier way to a colourful egg is the filament itself: print the two halves in different pastel colours, or use a multicolour silk PLA.
