Mesh mushroom

A hollow mesh mushroom in two halves that snap together on printed pins, with a hanging hole in the cap.

A mushroom you print flat: two square-mesh nets that you warm and press into halves, then push together on the pins printed on the rim. It closes into a hollow mushroom 120 mm wide, 116 mm tall and about 35 mm deep, with a 3 mm hole in the top of the cap for a string, so it hangs in a window, on a wall or on a branch.

Made with our mesh former: it is the Mushroom shape on the tool with its default settings and the printed pins. Each net prints in about 40 minutes, with no supports, and weighs about 11 g. The pins are printed on the front net and press into holes in the back one, so nothing extra is needed. The press is printed once and makes both halves, because the mushroom is symmetric.

Print the nets in a bright PETG or PLA, or each half in a different colour. The zip has both nets, the plug, the cavity, a print sheet and the outline as an SVG you can drop on the mesh former to change the size, the net pattern or the depth.

The first picture is a 3D render of the closed mushroom in front of the press. The others are photos of our own print: the press on the bed, the two nets, and a formed half.

How it is made

What you need

3
  • About 22 g of PETG or PLA per mushroom, and 71 g of PLA once for the press
  • A heat gun, or a hair dryer on its hottest setting
  • String or fishing line for hanging, and a drop of glue if you want it closed for good

How to make it

5
  1. Print the front net, the back net, the plug and the cavity, all flat on the bed.

  2. Lay the front net in the cavity's pocket, flat face down, so the small locator pins go through the holes in its rim.

  3. Warm it with the heat gun kept moving 15 to 20 cm away until it goes limp. Turn the plug over side to side, like the page of a book (its left edge goes to the right, its top stays at the top), push it straight down and hold it for a minute while it cools.

  4. Do the same with the back net in the same press.

  5. Put the halves rim to rim and press the printed pins of the front into the holes of the back. Tie a string through the hole in the cap.

Questions about this design

Do I need anything extra to join the two mushroom halves?

No. The pins are printed on the rim of the front net and press into the holes in the back net, so the halves click together with nothing else. A drop of glue on each pin makes it permanent; leave them dry if you want to open it again.

Can I make the mesh mushroom bigger or with another net?

Yes. Open the mesh former, pick the Mushroom shape (or drop the SVG from the zip on it) and change the size, the net pattern or the cell size. The tool rebuilds the nets and the press to match, and fits the depth so the net does not tear.

What filament works best for the mesh mushroom?

PETG forms over the widest heat window and stays tough. PLA works too but goes from stiff to floppy quickly, so keep the heat gun moving. The press only takes hand pressure, so print it in any PLA you have.
