3D render of a gold honeycomb mesh onion dome Christmas bauble with a pointed top, a cap and a hanging hole, in front of the orange and blue press that forms it
Print only ~85 g

An onion dome Christmas bauble you print flat, the shape of a church dome and of many old glass ornaments: a ball at the bottom that sweeps up into a point under a slim cap. Two honeycomb nets that you warm and press into halves, then push together on the pins round the rim. It closes into a hollow bauble 78 mm wide, 96 mm tall and about 70 mm deep, with a 3 mm hole through its cap for a thread, a ribbon or an ornament hook.

Made with our mesh former, from an outline drawn for this design and the same honeycomb net as our mesh drop bauble. Each net prints in about 23 minutes with no supports and weighs about 6.4 g. The dome is the same on its left and right, so one press, a plug and a cavity printed once, forms the front and the back half and as many ornaments as you like.

Print it in gold or copper silk PLA for the look of a gilded dome, and hang it with the mesh ball and the drop bauble for a mixed set. The zip has both nets, the plug, the cavity, a print sheet and the outline as an SVG for the mesh former.

Shown as a 3D render of the closed ornament in front of the press, not a photo.

How it is made

What you need

3
  • About 13 g of PETG or PLA per ornament, and 72 g of PLA once for the press
  • A heat gun, or a hair dryer on its hottest setting
  • Thread, ribbon or an ornament hook, and a drop of glue if you want it closed for good

How to make it

5
  1. Print the front net, the back net, the plug and the cavity, all flat on the bed.

  2. Lay the front net in the cavity's pocket, flat face down, so the small locator pins go through the holes in its rim.

  3. Warm it with the heat gun kept moving 15 to 20 cm away until it goes limp. Turn the plug over side to side, like the page of a book (its left edge goes to the right, its top stays at the top), push it straight down and hold it for a minute while it cools.

  4. Do the same with the back net in the same press.

  5. Put the halves rim to rim and press the printed pins of the front into the holes of the back. Thread the string through the hole in the cap.

Questions about this design

Does the point of the mesh onion dome bauble form in the press?

The ball and most of the sweep rise in the press. Near the point the outline gets narrower than the rim, so the tip and the cap stay solid and flat, which keeps them crisp and gives the 3 mm hanging hole a solid place to sit.

Can I put a light inside the mesh onion dome bauble?

Yes. It is hollow and about 70 mm deep, so a coin-cell LED or a fairy light bulb fits before you close the halves. The honeycomb lets the light out on every side.

Can I make the mesh onion dome bauble in another size?

Yes. Open the mesh former and drop the SVG from the zip on it, then change the size; the depth comes down with it and the tool warns you if the net would stretch too thin. The hanging hole stays 3 mm and needs the solid cap, so keep it.
