A cactus car freshie 64 x 99 mm and 10 mm thick: a saguaro with two arms and ribs down the column and each arm, standing in a pot with a rim and a zigzag band. The ridges between cactus and pot let you bake the cactus green and the pot terracotta in one go.

Made with our tray mold generator in its flexible silicone tray mode: print the caster, pour a platinum silicone into it and peel out a mold for two cacti. The aroma beads bake in that silicone, never in the print, and a post near the top of the column leaves the hole for the cord.

Cacti are a desert and boho staple next to the western shapes, and this one is narrow enough to hang from a vent clip. The zip carries the printed caster exactly as the tool exported it, one freshie on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the silicone figure the tool measured.

What you need

  • About 176 ml of platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more
  • Unscented aroma beads, about 40 ml per freshie by volume, heaped
  • Freshie fragrance oil, green and terracotta bead colour or mica
  • A baking sheet, a skewer, and elastic cord or a vent clip

How to cast it

  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up, no supports. It never goes in the oven: it is only the form the silicone cures in, and PLA softens at about 60 C.

  2. Pour 176 ml of a platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more into one corner in a thin stream, letting it rise over the shapes to the rim. Tap out the bubbles, let it cure and peel it out: that silicone is your freshie mold, with a post in each cavity for the hanging hole.

  3. A day or more ahead, shake unscented aroma beads with freshie fragrance oil in a lidded glass jar, about 1 oz of oil per pound of beads, and leave them until they feel dry. Shake in a pinch of mica for colour.

  4. Set the silicone mold on a baking sheet and fill each cavity level with the rim, then heap it slightly: the beads settle as they melt. Brush any beads off the top of each post.

  5. Bake at 300 to 350 F (150 to 175 C) for 10 to 15 minutes, in a ventilated kitchen and without leaving the oven, until the beads have fused but the top still looks beaded. Press with a skewer: done beads hold together.

  6. Let the mold cool completely, then flex it and pop the freshies out. Brush mica into the detail lines if you like, poke the hole clear with a skewer if a bead skinned over it, and hang it on an elastic cord where it touches nothing in the car.

Questions about this design

How do I bake the cactus freshie green and the pot a different colour?

Colour two batches of beads. Fill the pot up to the ridge along the rim with the pot colour, then fill the cactus and its arms with green and heap both slightly. The ridge keeps the colours apart while the beads fuse, so they bake in one go.

Can the cactus freshie hang from an air vent?

Yes. It is 64 mm wide, narrow enough for most vent clips: glue a flat vent clip to the back with a high-temperature glue once it has cooled, or thread a short cord through the hole and loop it over the clip. Keep it clear of the dashboard plastic.

Why did my cactus freshie stick in the arms?

It came out while still warm and soft, so the arms stretched instead of sliding out. Let the freshie cool completely in the silicone, about 20 to 30 minutes, then peel the silicone back from the arms first before you pull the column out.
