A cowboy boot car freshie 85 x 98 mm and 10 mm thick: a riding heel, a pointed toe, a scalloped top with a stitch line under it and a star on the shaft. Every section is outlined by a ridge in the mold, so the freshie comes out with grooves you can fill with mica, paint or a second colour of beads. A round post in each cavity leaves a clean 6 mm hole for the cord.

Freshies are car air fresheners baked from scented aroma beads, and this is how to make the mold for them: print one part, a caster, pour a platinum silicone into it and peel it out. That silicone is a two-boot freshie mold that goes in the oven. The print never does, because PLA softens at about 60 C and beads bake at 150 to 175 C.

Western shapes are the biggest sellers on any freshie table, and the boot pairs with our cowboy hat. The zip carries the printed caster exactly as the tool exported it, one freshie on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the silicone figure the tool measured.

What you need

  • About 167 ml of platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more
  • Unscented aroma beads, about 41 ml per freshie by volume, heaped
  • Freshie fragrance oil (about 1 oz per pound of beads) and mica powder
  • A baking sheet, a skewer, and elastic cord or ribbon to hang it

How to cast it

  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up, no supports. It never goes in the oven: it is only the form the silicone cures in, and PLA softens at about 60 C.

  2. Pour 167 ml of a platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more into one corner in a thin stream, letting it rise over the shapes to the rim. Tap out the bubbles, let it cure and peel it out: that silicone is your freshie mold, with a post in each cavity for the hanging hole.

  3. A day or more ahead, shake unscented aroma beads with freshie fragrance oil in a lidded glass jar, about 1 oz of oil per pound of beads, and leave them until they feel dry. Shake in a pinch of mica for colour.

  4. Set the silicone mold on a baking sheet and fill each cavity level with the rim, then heap it slightly: the beads settle as they melt. Brush any beads off the top of each post.

  5. Bake at 300 to 350 F (150 to 175 C) for 10 to 15 minutes, in a ventilated kitchen and without leaving the oven, until the beads have fused but the top still looks beaded. Press with a skewer: done beads hold together.

  6. Let the mold cool completely, then flex it and pop the freshies out. Brush mica into the detail lines if you like, poke the hole clear with a skewer if a bead skinned over it, and hang it on an elastic cord where it touches nothing in the car.

Questions about this design

How do I get two colours on the cowboy boot freshie?

Spoon the beads for the shaft in first, then fill the foot and heel with a second colour: the ridge along the vamp seam keeps them apart while they bake. For the star, bake it in one colour and brush gold or silver mica into the grooves once it has cooled.

Why is my cowboy boot freshie flat and shiny instead of beaded?

It baked too long or too hot. Take it out as soon as the beads hold together when you press them with a skewer, usually 10 to 15 minutes at 300 to 350 F. A smooth, glassy top means the beads fully melted and most of the scent went with them.

Can I sell cowboy boot freshies made in this mold?

Yes, with a commercial licence (Pro or Founder) for the finished freshies; the file itself may not be passed on. Label each one with the scent, the weight and a warning to keep it off plastic and leather surfaces, which many freshie sellers include on the card.
