A sunflower car freshie about 97 x 99 mm and 10 mm thick: fourteen pointed petals over a second row peeking out between them, and a domed centre with the seeds pressed in on a spiral. The centre stands proud of the petals and a ridge rings it, so it takes a brown or black bead colour while the petals stay yellow.

Made with our tray mold generator in its flexible silicone tray mode: print the caster, pour a platinum silicone into it and peel out a mold for two sunflowers. That silicone goes in the oven with the beads; the printed caster never does. A post in the top petal leaves the hanging hole.

Sunflowers are a year-round bestseller for freshie makers, and pair with fall and farmhouse scents. What you need

  • About 240 ml of platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more
  • Unscented aroma beads, about 55 ml per freshie by volume, heaped
  • Freshie fragrance oil, yellow and brown mica or bead colour
  • A baking sheet, a skewer, and elastic cord to hang it

How to cast it

  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up, no supports. It never goes in the oven: it is only the form the silicone cures in, and PLA softens at about 60 C.

  2. Pour 240 ml of a platinum silicone rated for 200 C (400 F) or more into one corner in a thin stream, letting it rise over the shapes to the rim. Tap out the bubbles, let it cure and peel it out: that silicone is your freshie mold, with a post in each cavity for the hanging hole.

  3. A day or more ahead, shake unscented aroma beads with freshie fragrance oil in a lidded glass jar, about 1 oz of oil per pound of beads, and leave them until they feel dry. Shake in a pinch of mica for colour.

  4. Set the silicone mold on a baking sheet and fill each cavity level with the rim, then heap it slightly: the beads settle as they melt. Brush any beads off the top of each post.

  5. Bake at 300 to 350 F (150 to 175 C) for 10 to 15 minutes, in a ventilated kitchen and without leaving the oven, until the beads have fused but the top still looks beaded. Press with a skewer: done beads hold together.

  6. Let the mold cool completely, then flex it and pop the freshies out. Brush mica into the detail lines if you like, poke the hole clear with a skewer if a bead skinned over it, and hang it on an elastic cord where it touches nothing in the car.

Questions about this design

How do I make the centre of the sunflower freshie brown?

Colour a small batch of beads brown or black with mica and spoon it into the round centre first; the ridge around it holds it in place. Fill the petals with yellow beads, heap them slightly and bake as usual. The seed pattern shows best on a dark centre.

Why do the petal tips of my sunflower freshie look thin?

Beads bridge over narrow points instead of filling them. Push a few beads into each petal tip with a skewer before you fill the rest, and heap the tray a little: the beads settle as they melt and pull away from the tips if the cavity was only level full.

What scents suit a sunflower freshie?

Sunflower and honey, sweet pea, lemon and sage, pumpkin spice in the autumn, or a fresh linen scent. The freshie holds about 55 ml of beads, so a scent that is strong at 1 oz per pound of beads keeps a car smelling of it for several weeks.
