Cowboy boots and hats, sunflowers, cacti, butterflies and a vintage truck, baked from aroma beads in a silicone mold you make.
A car freshie is a scented ornament baked from aroma beads: plastic beads soaked in fragrance oil, poured into a mold and melted in the oven until they fuse. The mold has to survive about 150 to 175 C, which rules out a printed part, so every design here is a caster. You print it, pour a heat-resistant silicone into it, and bake in the flexible silicone mold that comes out.
Each freshie has a hanging hole built into the shape, so you only thread a cord through once it has cooled. Fill the cavity level with scented beads, add mica powder if you want colour, bake until the surface looks glassy, and let it cool in the mold before you flex it out.
The shapes are the popular Western and garden ones that sell at markets and on Etsy. Selling freshies you bake from these molds needs a commercial licence; making them for your own car does not.
Questions
Most aroma beads fuse at about 150 to 175 C (300 to 350 F) in 15 to 25 minutes. Follow your bead supplier, bake on a tray with the oven ventilated, and never use the same oven at the same time as food.
A platinum-cure silicone rated to at least 200 C. Most mold-making silicones are, but check the data sheet. A cheap tin-cure silicone can go sticky after a few bakes.
About 1 part fragrance oil to 4 to 6 parts beads by weight. Shake them in a sealed jar and let them sit for a day or two until the beads feel dry again before you pour them.
