A classic Staunton rook, 57 mm tall on a 38 mm foot: foot, bead, a tapered tower, a collar and a turret with four crenels. It is drawn to stand with the pawn, knight, bishop, queen and king from this library, so a set cast from all of them matches.

The mold is exactly what our two-part candle mold generator builds for it, set to resin: two rigid halves with rubber-band grooves, pry pockets, a pour funnel on top and a thin air vent. The tower is turned round one axis, and the crenels sit at 45 degrees to the seam, each cut so it opens toward one half, which is why the tool's own seam check finds nothing stuck.

A chess set needs four rooks, two of each colour: print the mold once and cast them in black and ivory resin, or in plaster and paint them. The zip carries both halves, the rook master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 35 g of casting resin per rook: the cavity holds 32 ml
  • Mold release spray or wax
  • Rubber bands or clamps
  • A craft knife and fine sandpaper for the sprue

How to cast it

  1. Print both halves as exported. Clamp-strength settings: 4 walls, 40% gyroid infill, no supports. Sand the seam faces flat if your first layer came out rough.

  2. Coat both cavities with mold release, working it into the four crenels. Close the halves and band them along the whole seam.

  3. Mix the resin and pour it slowly down one side of the funnel so the air can leave through the other side and the vent.

  4. Leave it to cure fully, as long as the resin's datasheet says, then open the halves at the pry pockets.

  5. Cut the sprue off the top of the turret, sand it flat and trim the thin line along the seam. Release again and cast the next rook.

Questions about this design

Why are the chess rook crenels turned 45 degrees to the seam?

Because a rigid half can only pull straight off along one line. A crenel facing the seam from the side would trap mold material in it; set at 45 degrees, each crenel opens toward one half, and its inner wall is angled so that half slides out of it. From any side you still see a four-crenel rook.

Does the chess rook have a hollow top like a wooden rook?

No, the top of the turret is flat. A recess there would have turret wall on both sides of the seam round it and would lock a rigid mold. If you want one, drill a shallow 12 mm recess into the cured resin with a Forstner bit and polish it.

Will the chess rook match the other pieces in this library?

Yes. All six are Staunton pieces drawn as one set: pawn 51 mm, rook 57, knight 62, bishop 78, queen 88 and king 95, on feet from 30 to 42 mm, the usual proportions for a 95 mm king. Cast them in the same two resins and the set sits together.
