Heart hot chocolate bomb mold

Six puffy heart halves for heart hot chocolate bombs. A food-safe silicone mold for Valentine's Day.

3D render of the printed caster for a six-cavity silicone heart hot chocolate bomb mold, with three pink domed half hearts in front
Chocolate ~208 g Pro early access

A heart-shaped hot chocolate bomb: two domed half hearts, 60 x 51 mm and 22 mm deep, joined round a filling of cocoa mix and mini marshmallows. This mold makes six halves at a time, enough for three hearts, each half about 34 ml of space and about 15 g of chocolate when shelled. The heart is symmetric, so every half fits every other.

Made with our tray mold generator in its flexible silicone tray mode: print the caster, pour a food-safe platinum silicone into it and peel out a flexible six-cavity mold. The printed caster never touches food, only the silicone does, and the heart's cleft and point peel out of flexible silicone where a rigid mold would snap the shell.

A Valentine's, anniversary and Mother's Day favourite: pink or red candy melts, a white drizzle, a few freeze-dried raspberries in the filling. The zip carries the printed caster exactly as the tool exported it, one half heart on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the silicone figure the tool measured.

What you need

4
  • About 428 ml of food-safe platinum silicone, Shore 10A to 20A (mix it in one batch)
  • About 100 g of pink, red or white candy melts or tempered chocolate per batch of six halves
  • Hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows, about 1 tablespoon per heart
  • A plate you can warm, and a small pastry brush

How to cast it

9
  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up. It is one part, so there are no seams to seal. No supports.

  2. Set it on a level surface. Mix 428 ml of silicone in one batch and pour it into one corner in a thin stream, letting it flow round the raised shapes until it is level with the rim.

  3. Tap the caster on the table for a minute to bring the bubbles up, then let the silicone cure for as long as its datasheet says.

  4. Peel the cured silicone out of the caster. That silicone is your tray, and the caster is ready for another one.

  5. Temper chocolate or melt candy melts. Spoon about a tablespoon into each cavity and spread it up to the rim with the back of the spoon or a pastry brush. Chill for 5 minutes.

  6. Brush on a second coat, building it up thicker at the rim, where you will hold the shell and where the halves join. Chill for 10 minutes more, until the shells release from the silicone.

  7. Peel the silicone back from each rim and ease the halves out. Handle them with cool hands or gloves: warm fingers leave prints on the gloss.

  8. Warm a plate. Touch the rim of each half to it for a moment so the edge melts flat. Fill half of them with a tablespoon of hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows, then set an empty half on each and hold it for ten seconds.

  9. Pipe a line of chocolate round the seam and add sprinkles. To serve, put one in a mug and slowly pour about 250 ml of steaming milk over it.

Questions about this design

How do I line up the two halves of a heart hot chocolate bomb?

Seal them point to point and cleft to cleft. Touch the rim of the empty half to a warm plate, then lower it onto the filled half starting at the point and roll it down to the cleft. Hold it for ten seconds. Because the heart is symmetric, any two halves from this mold match.

Why does the cleft of my heart cocoa bomb break?

The cleft is the thinnest spot, where the shell bends in. Brush the first coat into it with a small brush, then build the second coat up there and along the rim. Peel the silicone back from the rounded lobes first and let the cleft come out last.

What goes inside a Valentine heart hot chocolate bomb?

A tablespoon of hot cocoa mix, a few mini marshmallows or heart sprinkles, and for pink milk, a teaspoon of freeze-dried strawberry powder. Keep every filling dry: anything wet softens the shell from inside and shortens how long the hearts keep.
