A return address in three lines of bold capitals, YOUR NAME, 12 YOUR STREET and YOUR TOWN 12345, with a small house on the left. Emboss the back flap of every envelope and the top of your letter paper. The address is a placeholder: redraw it with your own, or type it in the free embosser maker and upload the house as your picture.

Made with our free paper embosser maker, not modelled by hand: we drew the picture in code, uploaded it and set a 84 by 44 mm plate; the page traced it into the raised die and cut the matching cavity into the other plate. It prints as two loose plates, the male die with the raised design and the female die with the matching cavity, with pockets for 4 x 6 x 2 mm magnets that snap them into line. A plate this long presses more evenly by hand than on a hinge. The design is 70 by 21 mm with a 1 mm relief. The zip holds exactly what the tool gives you, as an STL and as a 3MF with the relief as its own coloured part, plus the picture, to change and upload again.

What you need

  • Card or paper of 160 to 300 gsm: cardstock, kraft tags, envelopes or letter paper
  • About 18 g of PLA or PETG
  • 4 neodymium disc magnets, 6 x 2 mm, and a drop of super glue

How to use it

  1. Print both plates as exported, face up, no supports.

  2. Stack the magnets so they attract, then glue one into each pocket, one at a time, so the plates snap together the right way round.

  3. Lay the card on the male die (the one with the raised design).

  4. Set the female die on top, let the magnets line it up, and squeeze the stack firmly, or clamp it for thick card.

  5. Lift the top plate off and take the card out: the mark stands up on the side that faced the female die.

How do I put my address on the return address embosser?

Open address.svg from the zip in any vector editor or even a text editor, replace the three lines with your name, street and town, save it as a PNG, and upload it to the free embosser maker with an 84 by 44 mm plate.

Why is the return address embosser held by magnets?

At 84 mm the plate is too long for the print-in-place hinge to press evenly, so it is made as two loose dies with four 6 by 2 mm magnets that line them up. Squeeze by hand or in a clamp for thick envelopes.

How long does the return address embosser take to print?

About 35 minutes and 18 g of PLA on a current printer at 0.2 mm layers, for both plates. The time is estimated from the files, not sliced; at 0.12 mm layers for the crispest design it takes about half as long again.
