A tray of nine domed 3D hearts, 44 mm across and 24 mm deep, rounded all over like a pillow, with a flat back. They fit a wine glass, a tumbler or a punch bowl, and each takes about 25 ml of water, juice or coffee.

Made with our tray mold generator in its flexible silicone tray mode: print the caster, pour a food-safe platinum silicone into it and peel out a flexible nine-heart tray. The printed caster never touches food or drink, only the silicone does, and a domed heart pops out of flexible silicone with a push from behind.

For Valentine's Day, weddings and baby showers: freeze rose petals, berries or edible flowers into them, or cranberry juice for pink hearts. They work as chocolate, gummy, soap and wax melt hearts too, in a tray you keep for each. The zip carries the printed caster exactly as the tool exported it, one heart on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the silicone figure the tool measured.

Heart ice cube tray at a glance: every printed part with its size, print time, filament, print settings and the three steps to use it

What you need

3
  • About 450 ml of food-safe platinum silicone, Shore 10A to 20A (mix it in one batch)
  • Water, juice or coffee, about 25 ml per heart
  • Berries, rose petals or edible flowers, if you want something frozen inside

How to cast it

7
  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up. It is one part, so there are no seams to seal. No supports.

  2. Set it on a level surface. Mix 450 ml of silicone in one batch and pour it into one corner in a thin stream, letting it flow round the raised shapes until it is level with the rim.

  3. Tap the caster on the table for a minute to bring the bubbles up, then let the silicone cure for as long as its datasheet says.

  4. Peel the cured silicone out of the caster. If the silicone's datasheet gives a post-cure, do it, then wash the tray in hot soapy water and rinse it before the first use. That silicone is your tray; the caster is ready for another one.

  5. Set the tray on a baking sheet. For a berry or flower inside, fill each cavity a third full, press it in face down and freeze for an hour, then top up to just below the rim.

  6. Freeze for 3 to 4 hours.

  7. Let the tray stand for a minute, then twist it at both ends and peel it back from each piece. Store the ice in a freezer bag so the tray is free for the next batch.

Questions about this design

How do I freeze a berry or flower in the middle of a heart ice cube?

Freeze in two goes. Fill each heart a third full, drop in a raspberry or an edible flower face down and freeze for an hour, so it is held in place. Then top up with cold, boiled water and freeze again. In one go, fruit floats to the flat back and shows only from behind.

How long do heart ice cubes take to freeze?

Three to four hours in a home freezer for water, a little longer for juice, which freezes softer because of its sugar. Push each heart out from behind while it is still frozen hard and keep them in a freezer bag, so the tray is free for the next batch.

Can the heart ice cube tray make chocolate or gummy hearts?

Yes, in a separate tray you keep for sweets. At about 25 ml each these are big hearts, so a gelatine gummy heart needs about four hours in the fridge, and a solid chocolate heart is better made as a shell: brush two coats of tempered chocolate in, chill, and fill.
