◆ Sealing wax

Christmas wax seal set

Six Christmas wax seal stamps, from a tree to a candy cane: one screw-on handle and a 28 mm plate for each.

3D render of printed wax seal stamp plates with a Christmas tree, an eight-pointed Christmas star and a bauble, face up beside their brown handle, and a round wax seal pressed with a Christmas tree
Sealing wax ~22 g

Six festive seals, each raised inside a fine ring on its own 28 mm plate: a tiered tree with a star on top and baubles, holly with two leaves and three berries, a bell with a bow, an eight-pointed star, a striped candy cane and a bauble with wavy bands. Seal Christmas cards, gift tags and wrapping paper, advent calendar envelopes, cookie boxes and the labels on homemade gifts.

Made with our free stamp maker, not modelled by hand: we drew each design in code, knocked out of a solid disc, uploaded the picture and set a 28 mm circle with the relief at 1 mm, enough for wax without trapping it. The page cut the design into the face, so it stands proud on the seal, and mirrored it, so it reads the right way round in the wax.

The tool makes every plate with the same screw thread ("one handle takes any number of screw-on faces"), so this zip holds six plates, one STL per design, and a single handle that fits them all and our other wax seal sets. The plates and the handle are the tool's own download for each design, split into one file per part; nothing else was changed. The pictures are in the zip too, to make a plate of your own.

Shown as a 3D render of some of the printed plates, the handle and a seal pressed into wax, not a photo.

Christmas wax seal set at a glance: every printed part with its size, print time, filament, print settings and the three steps to use it

What you need

3
  • Sealing wax: glue-gun wax sticks with a mini glue gun, traditional wick sticks, or wax beads in a melting spoon
  • An ice pack or a cold metal plate, to chill the stamp between seals
  • About 22 g of filament for all six plates and the handle: PETG or PLA for the plates, PLA for the handle

How to use it

5
  1. Print the handle once, standing on its foot, and the plates you want face down on the bed, all as exported, no supports.

  2. Screw a plate onto the handle until it is snug.

  3. Chill the face on an ice pack for a minute.

  4. Pour a puddle of wax a little wider than the seal, wait about ten seconds, then press the stamp straight down and hold it still for 10 to 20 seconds.

  5. Lift straight up once the wax has set, and chill the stamp again before the next seal.

Questions about this design

How do I seal a stack of cards quickly with the Christmas wax seal set?

Make the seals ahead on baking paper, a few dozen at a time, swapping plates as you go. Once they are hard, peel them off and stick them on with glue dots. Chill each plate between seals so it keeps releasing cleanly.

Which wax colours suit the Christmas wax seal set?

Deep red, forest green and gold are the classics, and white or silver look frosty on a dark envelope. Red wax with a little gold mica brushed over the raised star or bell once it has set looks especially festive.

How long do the plates of the Christmas wax seal set take to print?

About 15 minutes a plate and about 25 minutes for the handle at 0.2 mm layers and MK3-class speeds, the basis of every stamp in the catalog; all six plates and the handle come to about 2 h. A current printer is faster. The times are estimated from the parts' volume, not sliced.
