Art deco concrete coaster tray mold

A printed tray for four square coasters, each 95 mm across and 10 mm thick, with an art deco sunburst in the face: fourteen rays fanning up from the bottom edge, crossed by three arches.

Made with our tray mold generator in its rigid tray mode: print the tray, wipe in release and pour concrete, Jesmonite or plaster straight in. The pattern is a set of shallow sloped grooves, so a glass sits flat and the coaster lifts out of the rigid tray.

The zip carries the tray exactly as the tool exported it, one coaster on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the volume of each cavity.

What you need

  • Fine concrete, Jesmonite or plaster, about 86 ml per coaster
  • Mold release or cooking oil
  • Gold paint pen for the lines, if you like

How to cast it

  1. Print the tray as exported, cavities up, no supports. PLA is fine.
  2. Wipe a thin film of mold release or cooking oil into every cavity, including the grooves.
  3. Mix a fine concrete or Jesmonite to a thick pour, fill each cavity, and vibrate it out: tap the tray on the table or hold a sander against the side for a minute until no more bubbles rise.
  4. Cover the tray and let it cure for 24 hours, then flex the tray and tip the pieces out. Sand the back flat, and seal them once they have dried for a few days.

Questions about this design

How do I paint gold lines into the sunburst?

Seal the coaster first, then run a fine gold paint pen or a small brush with metallic paint along the grooves. Any paint that strays onto the face wipes off the sealed surface with a damp cloth before it dries.

Can I cast the art deco coasters in black?

Yes. Add a black iron oxide pigment to the concrete or Jesmonite, a few percent by weight of the dry mix. Black concrete with gold lines in the sunburst is the classic deco look.

Why is the sunburst so shallow?

So the coaster works as a coaster: a glass has to sit flat, and deep grooves collect water. The grooves are just under a millimetre deep with sloped sides, which is enough to catch the light and paint, and it keeps the cast releasing from the rigid tray.
