A butterfly with large rounded upper wings, smaller lower wings and a body down the middle. The four wing areas give you four separate spaces to flood in different colours. Good for spring birthdays, garden parties, baby showers and Easter. The cookie comes out about 85 by 69 mm.

Made with our free cookie cutter generator, not modelled by hand: we drew the silhouette, uploaded it to the tool and set the cutter size to 85 mm. The STL in the zip is exactly what the tool gives you: a 0.8 mm blade, 14 mm tall, with a 4 mm rim to press on, exported rim down so it prints without supports. The silhouette is in the zip too, as an SVG, so you can make it bigger, smaller or add a matching stamp.

Flood the wings in one colour, then drop dots of a second colour on the wet icing and drag a toothpick through them. You get marbled wing patterns in seconds.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed cutter and two cookies in its shape, not a photo.

What you need

  • Rolled cookie dough that holds its shape: sugar cookie or gingerbread, with little or no baking powder
  • A rolling pin, and two 5 to 6 mm guides for an even thickness
  • Flour for dipping the cutter, and baking paper
  • About 7 g of PLA or PETG, ideally a food-contact filament

How to use it

  1. Print the cutter as exported: rim flat on the bed, blade pointing up, no supports.
  2. Wash it in warm soapy water before the first use.
  3. Roll the chilled dough 5 to 6 mm thick between two sheets of baking paper.
  4. Dip the blade in flour, press straight down with your palm on the rim, and lift.
  5. Chill the cut cookies for ten minutes, then bake.
  6. Wash the cutter by hand straight after use and let it dry. PLA softens in a dishwasher.

Questions about this design

How do I get patterns on the butterfly wings?

Wet-on-wet icing: flood one wing, drop small dots of a second colour into it straight away and pull a toothpick through the dots. Do the matching wing the same way so the pattern mirrors.

Is the butterfly cookie cutter hard to use with soft dough?

No, but chill the dough first. Soft dough stretches when you lift it from between the wings. Cut on baking paper and move the paper, not the cookie, onto the tray.

Can I make the butterfly cutter bigger or smaller?

Yes. Upload butterfly.svg from the zip to the free cookie cutter generator and move the Cutter size slider (this one is 85 mm). You can also switch on a matching stamp there, or change the blade height and rim.
