Gingerbread man cookie cutter

A 100 mm gingerbread man with sturdy arms and legs that do not snap off the tray.

The classic gingerbread man: round head, short arms held out, legs apart. The limbs are deliberately chunky, because thin gingerbread arms are the first thing to break when you lift a warm cookie off the sheet. Good for Christmas baking, advent calendars and cookie decorating parties. The cookie comes out about 87 by 100 mm.

Made with our free cookie cutter generator, not modelled by hand: we drew the silhouette, uploaded it to the tool and set the cutter size to 100 mm. The STL in the zip is exactly what the tool gives you: a 0.8 mm blade, 14 mm tall, with a 4 mm rim to press on, exported rim down so it prints without supports. The silhouette is in the zip too, as an SVG, so you can make it bigger, smaller or add a matching stamp.

Gingerbread dough is stiff: press the cutter straight down with the flat of your hand on the rim, do not wiggle it, and the arms come out clean.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed cutter and two cookies in its shape, not a photo.

What you need

  • Rolled cookie dough that holds its shape: sugar cookie or gingerbread, with little or no baking powder
  • A rolling pin, and two 5 to 6 mm guides for an even thickness
  • Flour for dipping the cutter, and baking paper
  • About 10 g of PLA or PETG, ideally a food-contact filament

How to use it

  1. Print the cutter as exported: rim flat on the bed, blade pointing up, no supports.
  2. Wash it in warm soapy water before the first use.
  3. Roll the chilled dough 5 to 6 mm thick between two sheets of baking paper.
  4. Dip the blade in flour, press straight down with your palm on the rim, and lift.
  5. Chill the cut cookies for ten minutes, then bake.
  6. Wash the cutter by hand straight after use and let it dry. PLA softens in a dishwasher.

Questions about this design

Why do my gingerbread men lose their arms?

Usually because they are lifted while still warm. Leave them on the tray for five minutes after baking so the sugar sets, then move them with a thin spatula under the whole cookie, not just the body.

What dough works best with the gingerbread man cutter?

A rolled gingerbread dough with molasses and little or no baking soda. It holds sharp edges and does not puff. Roll it to about 5 mm between two sheets of baking paper and chill it before cutting.

Can I make the gingerbread man cutter bigger or smaller?

Yes. Upload gingerbread-man.svg from the zip to the free cookie cutter generator and move the Cutter size slider (this one is 100 mm). You can also switch on a matching stamp there, or change the blade height and rim.
