A classic, full-bodied heart with rounded lobes and a clean point, the shape people reach for more than any other. It is sized for a proper cookie you can flood with royal icing, not a bite-sized one. Good for Valentine's Day, weddings, Mother's Day, anniversaries and baby showers. The cookie comes out about 75 by 69 mm.

Made with our free cookie cutter generator, not modelled by hand: we drew the silhouette, uploaded it to the tool and set the cutter size to 75 mm. The STL in the zip is exactly what the tool gives you: a 0.8 mm blade, 14 mm tall, with a 4 mm rim to press on, exported rim down so it prints without supports. The silhouette is in the zip too, as an SVG, so you can make it bigger, smaller or add a matching stamp.

The point is the first place a heart cookie spreads and burns. Chill the cut hearts for ten minutes before they go in the oven and the point stays sharp.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed cutter and two cookies in its shape, not a photo.

What you need

  • Rolled cookie dough that holds its shape: sugar cookie or gingerbread, with little or no baking powder
  • A rolling pin, and two 5 to 6 mm guides for an even thickness
  • Flour for dipping the cutter, and baking paper
  • About 6 g of PLA or PETG, ideally a food-contact filament

How to use it

  1. Print the cutter as exported: rim flat on the bed, blade pointing up, no supports.
  2. Wash it in warm soapy water before the first use.
  3. Roll the chilled dough 5 to 6 mm thick between two sheets of baking paper.
  4. Dip the blade in flour, press straight down with your palm on the rim, and lift.
  5. Chill the cut cookies for ten minutes, then bake.
  6. Wash the cutter by hand straight after use and let it dry. PLA softens in a dishwasher.

Questions about this design

How do I keep the point of a heart cookie from spreading?

Use a dough with no baking powder, roll it cold, and chill the cut hearts on the tray for ten minutes before baking. The point is the thinnest part, so it spreads first when the butter warms up.

Can I flood the heart cookie with royal icing?

Yes, that is what this size is for. Pipe an outline a couple of millimetres in from the edge, let it crust for a few minutes, then flood the middle. The rounded lobes fill evenly without air pockets.

Can I make the heart cutter bigger or smaller?

Yes. Upload heart.svg from the zip to the free cookie cutter generator and move the Cutter size slider (this one is 75 mm). You can also switch on a matching stamp there, or change the blade height and rim.
