A round soap bar 78 mm across and about 21 mm thick that looks like a slice of lemon: a raised rind round the edge, ten domed segments between thin membranes, a small core in the middle and three pips pressed in.

Made with the box mode of our silicone mold maker in its round shape: print the base with the soap master fused onto it face up, the walls and the clamps, pour about 272 ml of silicone, and the block you get casts the bar face down, so the slice comes out on the show face and the back stays flat.

A fresh, cheerful soap for a kitchen sink or a summer market stall. Pour it in yellow, lime green or orange, or pour the rind first in a stronger colour. The zip carries every printed part, the soap master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 301 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • Melt-and-pour soap base, about 95 ml per bar
  • Yellow soap colour, a lemon fragrance and rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle

How to cast it

  1. Print the base with the master fused onto it, the two walls and the two clamps.

  2. Stand the walls on the base, slide the clamps over the corners, and seal the outside seams with tape or hot glue.

  3. Mix 301 ml of silicone in one batch and pour it into a corner, letting it rise around the master until it covers the top.

  4. Once it has cured, take the clamps and walls off and pull the silicone block off the master. That block is your mold.

  5. Turn the block over. Pour melt-and-pour soap at 55 to 60 C, spray the surface with alcohol to pop the bubbles, and let it set for a few hours.

  6. Flex the silicone and push the bar out from the back. Wrap it once it is at room temperature.

Questions about this design

How do I make the rind of the lemon soap a different colour?

Pour a thin layer of deeper yellow or green soap first, just enough to fill the rind ring round the edge, and spray it with alcohol. Let it skin over for a minute, spray again, then pour the pale yellow main colour on top so the layers bond.

Which fragrance suits a lemon slice soap?

Lemon, lemongrass, lime or a fresh verbena blend. Citrus essential oils fade quickly in soap, so a skin-safe fragrance oil made for melt-and-pour holds the scent better; stay within the base's stated maximum, usually 3 percent.

Can the lemon slice mold make bath bombs or wax melts?

Wax melts, yes: the silicone mold takes wax at any normal melt temperature and the slice pops out cleanly. Bath bomb mixture is packed rather than poured, and it does not hold this fine face detail well, so press it only into a sturdy rigid mold.
