The skull emoji people send when something is so funny they are dead: a big round cranium, a square jaw, huge eye sockets, a little nose and three teeth. The cutter cuts the outline and the matching stamp presses the face in, so every cookie comes out already drawn. Good for Halloween, Day of the Dead, birthdays for the friend who always sends 💀, and group chat meetups. The cookie comes out about 70 by 85 mm.

Made with our free cookie cutter generator, not modelled by hand: we drew the silhouette with the face cut out of it, uploaded it to the tool, set the cutter size to 85 mm and switched on its stamp. The STL in the zip is exactly what the tool gives you: the cutter (a 0.8 mm blade, 14 mm tall, with a 4 mm rim to press on) and, next to it, the stamp that presses the face into the cut cookie. Both print flat, with no supports. The silhouette is in the zip too, as an SVG, so you can make it bigger or smaller.

Stamp the cookies straight after cutting, while the dough is still cold and firm. Then fill the pressed eyes and nose with black icing or melted dark chocolate and the face pops.

What you need

  • Rolled cookie dough that holds its shape: sugar cookie or gingerbread, with little or no baking powder
  • A rolling pin, and two 5 to 6 mm guides for an even thickness
  • Flour for dipping the cutter, and baking paper
  • About 20 g of PLA or PETG, ideally a food-contact filament

How to use it

  1. Print the file as exported: the cutter rim flat on the bed with the blade pointing up, and the stamp beside it, no supports.
  2. Wash it in warm soapy water before the first use.
  3. Roll the chilled dough 5 to 6 mm thick between two sheets of baking paper.
  4. Dip the blade in flour, press straight down with your palm on the rim, and lift.
  5. Flour the stamp, press it pattern side down into each cut cookie about 2 mm deep, and lift it straight up.
  6. Chill the cut cookies for ten minutes, then bake.
  7. Wash the cutter by hand straight after use and let it dry. PLA softens in a dishwasher.

Questions about this design

How deep should I press the skull stamp into the cookie?

About 2 mm, a third of a 6 mm cookie. Any deeper and the thin bridges between the eyes and the nose can crack when the cookie bakes and puffs. Press it straight down, then lift it straight up.

How do I colour the face on the skull emoji cookies?

Flood the whole skull in white royal icing and let it set, then fill the pressed eye sockets, nose and teeth lines with black icing. Or skip the white and just fill the marks with melted dark chocolate for a quick version.

Can I make the skull emoji cutter bigger or smaller?

Yes. Upload skull.svg from the zip to the free cookie cutter generator, switch on Generate stamp, and move the Cutter size slider (this one is 85 mm). The stamp scales with the cutter, so the face still fits.
