A sugar skull (calavera) candle 72 mm tall and 63 mm wide: a rounded skull with deep eye sockets, each ringed by a scalloped border of raised petals, a flower on the forehead, an upside-down heart nose, dotted cheeks and a row of teeth.

The mold is exactly what our two-part candle mold generator builds for it: two rigid halves with rubber-band grooves, pry pockets and a pour funnel on top. All the decoration sits on the face, the front half, and none of it reaches the sides the seam runs down, so the tool's own seam check finds nothing stuck. No silicone needed.

Made for Día de los Muertos, Halloween and anyone who loves a colourful skull. Pour it in white and paint the petals and flower in bright colours, or pour it black and pick the decoration out in gold. The zip carries both halves, the skull master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 116 g of pillar wax: the cavity holds 129 ml
  • A tabbed, primed wick for a 50 mm candle, about 90 mm long
  • Rubber bands or clamps, and a clip or wick bar across the funnel

How to cast it

  1. Print both halves as exported. Clamp-strength settings: 4 walls, 40% gyroid infill, no supports.

  2. Drop a tabbed wick into one half so the tab sits on the cavity floor, close the halves and band them along the whole seam.

  3. Clip the wick centred across the pour funnel and pour at 65 to 75 C.

  4. Once the first pour is firm but still warm, top up the funnel. Wax shrinks, and the second pour fills the dip.

  5. Cool fully, open the halves at the pry pockets and trim the wick. Paint the petals, flower and cheeks if you like.

Questions about this design

How do I paint the sugar skull candle?

Pour it in white. Once cool, paint the petal rings and the forehead flower in bright candle paint, the nose black and the cheek dots in a contrast colour. The decoration is raised 1.3 to 1.6 mm, so a small brush follows it easily.

Where does the wick come out of the sugar skull?

Out of the top of the skull, where the pour funnel sits, straight down the middle. The eye sockets are deep but stay well clear of the wick.

Is the sugar skull a good candle for Día de los Muertos altars?

Yes, that is what it is designed for. Pour a set in white, orange and purple, and decorate each one differently. Each takes about 129 ml of wax.
