A bobbin taper candle 165 mm tall: eight round beads stacked one on the next, getting a little smaller towards the tip, on a 22 mm foot that drops into any standard taper holder. The bubbly taper that is on every styled dinner table right now.

The mold is exactly what our two-part candle mold generator builds for it: two rigid halves with rubber-band grooves, pry pockets and a pour funnel on top. A turned shape always pulls straight out of a split through its axis, so the tool's own seam check finds nothing stuck, and the beads come out as round as they went in. No silicone needed.

Pour a pair in sage, terracotta or cream for a table, or a rainbow of them for a gift box. The zip carries both halves, the taper master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 42 g of pillar wax: the cavity holds 47 ml
  • A primed taper wick, about 190 mm long
  • Rubber bands or clamps, and a clip or wick bar across the funnel

How to cast it

  1. Print both halves as exported. Clamp-strength settings: 4 walls, 40% gyroid infill, no supports.

  2. Drop a tabbed wick into one half so the tab sits on the cavity floor, close the halves and band them along the whole seam.

  3. Clip the wick centred across the pour funnel and pour at 65 to 75 C.

  4. Once the first pour is firm but still warm, top up the funnel. Wax shrinks, and the second pour fills the dip.

  5. Cool fully, open the halves at the pry pockets and trim the wick to about 8 mm. Let the taper rest a day before you burn it.

Questions about this design

Which wax works for a bobbin taper candle?

A taper or pillar wax: paraffin, beeswax or a hard soy pillar blend. Container soy is too soft and a thin taper will bend. A drop of stearin makes the beads harder and brighter, and it helps the taper let go of the mold.

Does the bobbin taper fit a normal candle holder?

Yes. The foot is a plain 22 mm cylinder 10 mm tall, the size standard taper holders are made for. If a holder is a little tight, warm the foot in your hand for a moment and twist it in.

Will a bobbin taper drip?

Less than you might expect, if the wick matches the width. The beads are 20 to 24 mm across, so use a wick made for a 22 mm taper, keep it trimmed to 8 mm, and keep the candle away from draughts.
