◆ Candle wax
The viral 27-bubble cube candle, as a silicone mold from a printed hugging shell.
The real 3 x 3 x 3 bubble cube: all 27 bubbles, about 61 mm on each side, with a flat base so it stands. Every pair of bubbles meets in a narrow waist, and that is why no rigid mold can release this shape. It is a silicone job, and this is a silicone mold kit.
Made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker, which is the mode the site's own mold advisor recommends for this shape. You print a base with the bubble cube already fused onto it plus a two-part shell that follows the cube's outline, pour about 268 ml of silicone into it, and the cured silicone is a flexible mold you can cast candle after candle in. A plain box around the same cube would take about 40% more silicone.
The bubbles are exact spheres with a hidden core, so there are no tunnels between them for silicone to fill: the candle comes out solid. The zip carries every printed part, the bubble cube master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.
Shown as a 3D render of the printed mold parts pulled apart around the master, not a photo.

Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, and the two shell halves. No supports.
Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and hold the seams shut with steel binder clips. The seats for them are built into the shell.
Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.
Mix 296 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.
Once it has cured, unclip the shell, lift it off and peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.
Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

Every pair of bubbles meets in a waist, and a rigid mold around a waist is locked in by the candle on both sides. Silicone stretches over the bubbles and peels off. That is also why the first version of this design, a rigid mold with the bubbles turned into ribs, was replaced.
About 268 ml for the mold, so mix 296 ml to allow for what stays in the cup. The tool's print-settings sheet in the zip has the exact figures, and a tin or platinum casting silicone around Shore 20 to 30 A works well.
Pierce the silicone at the centre of the top with a wick needle, thread a primed wick through from the inside, and pour through the opening at the base. Or pour first and push a heated wick pin through the set candle.
