D20 candle mold

A 70 mm d20 candle with all twenty numbers engraved, the real die as a candle. Silicone mold kit.

3D render of the d20 master with engraved numbers fused on its printed charcoal base, between the blue and orange hugging shell halves
Candle wax ~278 g Pro early access

A twenty-sided die candle 70 mm from face to face, with every number from 1 to 20 engraved in its faces like a real d20, and the 20 on top. It stands on its 1, so the natural 20 is what faces up on the table.

The mold is made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker. Engraved numbers on every face lock any rigid mold, and silicone peels out of them. Print the base with the die fused onto it, the two shell halves and the six clamps, pour about 565 ml of silicone, and cast in the flexible mold that comes out.

Light it at the start of a session for luck, or cast a set in the party's colours as gifts. It looks best in a deep purple, red or a marbled pour, with a little gold mica rubbed into the numbers. The zip carries every printed part, the die master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed mold parts pulled apart around the master, not a photo.

What you need

5
  • About 608 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 212 g of pillar wax per candle: each cast is 236 ml
  • Tape or a hot glue gun for the outside seams
  • A primed wick for a 60 mm pillar
  • A sharp craft knife for one small vent cut

How to cast it

7
  1. Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, the two shell halves and the six clamps (all six are in clamps.stl). No supports.

  2. Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and push the six printed clamps over the seams. Steel binder clips work too, the seats for them are built into the shell.

  3. Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.

  4. Mix 608 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.

  5. Once it has cured, unclip the shell and slide each half off SIDEWAYS, not upward: the master is wider above its foot, so the base rib is left open for that. Then peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.

  6. Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

  7. Before the first cast, cut a thin vent into the silicone from about 5 mm up the die toward the opening. The tool found about 1.8 ml of air that cannot rise out on its own there, and the vent lets it escape.

Questions about this design

Where does the wick go in the d20 candle?

Through the centre of the 20 face, between the 2 and the 0. Pierce the silicone there with a wick needle and thread a primed wick through before you pour; the opening you pour into is the 1 face the die stands on.

Why does the d20 mold need a vent cut?

The tool checks where air can get stuck while you pour, and on this die about 1.8 ml stays trapped about 5 mm up from the foot, where it cannot rise to the opening. One thin cut in the cured silicone from that spot to the opening lets it out, and every cast after that comes out with that face whole.

How do I make the numbers on the d20 candle stand out?

The numbers are engraved, so rub a little gold or silver mica into them with a fingertip once the candle is out of the mold, then buff the faces around them clean. On a dark wax it looks like a painted die.
