A frog in a cowboy hat, the internet's favourite frog, as a candle. A rigid two-part print, no silicone.

A frog candle 80 mm tall: a round frog sitting up with big eyes on top, a wide smug smile, front feet with little toes, back legs folded at the sides, and a cowboy hat with a crease in the crown and a brim that curls up at the sides.

The mold is exactly what our two-part candle mold generator builds for it: two rigid halves with rubber-band grooves, pry pockets and a pour funnel on top. The seam runs from ear to ear under the hat, so the face and the front of the hat are one half and the back is the other. The tool's own seam check finds nothing stuck, and you need no silicone.

Yeehaw. Pour it frog green, paint the hat brown once it is out, and it is the most requested candle at every market table. The zip carries both halves, the frog master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 117 g of pillar wax: the cavity holds 130 ml
  • A tabbed, primed wick for a 55 mm candle, about 100 mm long
  • Rubber bands or clamps, and a clip or wick bar across the funnel

How to cast it

  1. Print both halves as exported. Clamp-strength settings: 4 walls, 40% gyroid infill, no supports.
  2. Drop a tabbed wick into one half so the tab sits on the cavity floor, close the halves and band them along the whole seam.
  3. Clip the wick centred across the pour funnel and pour at 65 to 75 C.
  4. Once the first pour is firm but still warm, top up the funnel. Wax shrinks, and the second pour fills the dip.
  5. Cool fully, open the halves at the pry pockets and trim the wick where it comes out of the crown.

Questions about this design

How do I paint the hat on the frog candle?

Pour the whole frog in green, then paint the hat with a brown candle paint or brown mica mixed into a little medium once the candle is out. A dab of black on the pupils finishes it.

Will the hat brim on the frog candle break?

The brim is about 4.5 mm thick, sized so wax holds it. Let the candle cool fully in the mold before you open it, and lift the front half off straight rather than rocking it, and the brim comes out whole.

Where does the wick come out of the frog candle?

Out of the top of the hat. The pour funnel sits on the crown, so drop the tabbed wick down through it before you close the halves and clip it centred across the funnel while you pour.
