Giant dice candle mold

A 90 mm giant dice candle with round pips on five faces. A silicone mold from a printed shell.

Candle wax ~730 g

A giant dice candle 90 mm on every side, its edges rounded to 9 mm, with the pips as round dimples 14 mm across and 2.5 mm deep: six on top and two, three, four and five round the sides. The bottom, where the one would be, is flat, because that is the face the silicone mold is poured through.

Made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker. The pips on the sides are undercuts a rigid two-part mold cannot let go of, so print the base with the die fused onto it, the two shell halves and the six clamps, pour about 488 ml of silicone, and cast in the flexible mold that comes out.

A big, solid candle for game night, a tabletop or D&D table, or a Vegas-themed party: pour it white and fill the pips with black or red, or pour it red and fill them white. At 90 mm it takes about 697 g of wax, so plan the wick for a wide candle. The zip carries every printed part, the die master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed mold parts pulled apart around the master, not a photo.

How this mold works

What you need

4
  • About 527 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 697 g of pillar wax per candle: each cast is 774 ml
  • Tape or a hot glue gun for the outside seams
  • A primed wick rated for a 90 mm pillar, about 120 mm long, and a wick needle

How to cast it

6
  1. Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, the two shell halves and the six clamps (all six are in clamps.stl). No supports.

  2. Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and push the six printed clamps over the seams. Steel binder clips work too, the seats for them are built into the shell.

  3. Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.

  4. Mix 527 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.

  5. Once it has cured, unclip the shell, lift it off and peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.

  6. Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

Questions about this design

Where does the wick go in the giant dice candle?

Through the middle of the six face, between its two rows of pips. The die casts upside down through the flat bottom, so pierce the silicone at the centre of the six with a wick needle, thread a primed wick through from the inside and pull it taut before you pour.

What wick does a 90 mm giant dice candle need?

A wide one: choose a wick the supplier rates for a 90 mm pillar, or the candle tunnels and leaves a wall of wax. For an even pool to the edges, push two more wicks into the set candle with a heated wick pin, three in a row across the six face, and burn them together.

How do I colour the pips on the giant dice candle?

Let the candle cool fully, then fill each dimple with a little melted wax in a contrasting colour from a dropper, or brush in candle paint, and scrape the face flat with a card once it sets. Black on white is the classic die; white on red is the casino look.
