Honeycomb wax melt tray mold

Nine hexagon wax melts with a honeycomb pattern pressed into the face.

3D render of the printed caster for a nine-hexagon honeycomb silicone tray, with three honey-coloured hexagon melts in front
Candle wax Pro early access

A tray of nine hexagon melts, 45 mm across the flats and 14 mm deep, each face covered in a honeycomb of small cells. It suits beeswax blends, honey-scented melts and soap alike.

Made with our tray mold generator in its flexible silicone tray mode: print the caster, pour silicone into it and peel out a flexible nine-cavity tray. The hexagons tile, so the caster walls follow them tightly and very little silicone is spent between the cavities.

The zip carries the printed caster exactly as the tool exported it, one hexagon on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the silicone figure the tool measured.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed caster with three honey-coloured melts in front, not a photo.

What you need

  • About 336 ml of silicone for the tray (mix it in one batch)
  • Wax melt blend, beeswax or melt-and-pour soap, about 24 ml per hexagon
  • A heat-proof jug for pouring

How to cast it

  1. Print the caster as exported, open side up. It is one part, so there are no seams to seal. No supports.
  2. Set it on a level surface. Mix 336 ml of silicone in one batch and pour it into one corner in a thin stream, letting it flow round the raised shapes until it is level with the rim.
  3. Tap the caster on the table for a minute to bring the bubbles up, then let the silicone cure for as long as its datasheet says.
  4. Peel the cured silicone out of the caster. That silicone is your tray, and the caster is ready for another one.
  5. Fill each cavity, let it set, then flex the tray and peel it back to pop the pieces out.

Questions about this design

Can I pour pure beeswax into the honeycomb tray?

Yes. Beeswax is stiff when it sets and shrinks more than soy, so let it cool slowly at room temperature and flex the tray only once the hexagons are cold right through. The honeycomb face releases cleanly from silicone.

Does the honeycomb pattern work for soap bars?

Yes, as melt-and-pour guest soaps of about 24 ml each. Spray the surface with a little rubbing alcohol right after pouring to pop the bubbles, and the cells stay crisp.

How deep is the honeycomb pattern on each melt?

The grooves between the cells are about a millimetre deep and a millimetre and a half wide. That is enough to catch mica or a darker wax rubbed into the lines, and shallow enough that the wax releases without tearing.
