Mushroom candle mold

A spotted mushroom candle with a domed cap, as a silicone box mold.

Candle wax ~230 g

A toadstool candle 55 mm tall with a 69 mm domed cap, a soft rim, seven raised spots and a stem that flares at the foot. The cap overhangs the stem all the way round, which a rigid mold cannot release and silicone can.

Made with the box mode of our silicone mold maker, which the site's own mold advisor ranks first for this shape. You print a base with the mushroom fused onto it, two round walls and two clamps, pour about 473 ml of silicone around it, and get a solid silicone block that flexes off the cap every time.

The zip carries every printed part, the mushroom master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file that puts every setting back on the generator.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed mold parts pulled apart around the master, not a photo.

What you need

4
  • About 511 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 81 g of wax per candle: each cast is 90 ml
  • Tape or a hot glue gun for the wall seams
  • A primed wick

How to cast it

4
  1. Print the base with the master fused onto it, the two walls and the two clamps.

  2. Stand the base on the table. Set each wall down a few centimetres out from it and slide it in over the table until the ridge round the base sits in the groove at its foot, then slide the clamps down over the seams. Once they are on, the walls cannot lift, and the ridge seals the bottom.

  3. Mix 511 ml of silicone in one batch and pour it into a corner, letting it rise around the master until it covers the top.

  4. Once it has cured, take the clamps off, slide the walls straight out and pull the silicone block off the master. That block is your mold.

Questions about this design

How does the cap come out through the stem opening?

The silicone stretches. Flex the block back from the cap edge all the way round and the candle eases out through the opening at the base. If your silicone is on the firm side, a short cut from the opening up one side makes it much easier and closes up again when you pour.

Box or hugging shell for the mushroom?

About 473 ml, so mix 511 ml in one batch. The hugging-shell mode of the same tool uses less on this shape, and the recipe file lets you try it from these settings.

Can I make a set of different sizes?

Scale the master STL in the zip and upload it to the silicone mold maker. Every size gets its own base, walls and clamps built to fit.
