Made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker: print the base with the cone fused onto it and the two shell halves, pour about 535 ml of silicone, and the flexible mold that comes out peels off the ribs that would hook a rigid mold at the seam.

Pour three in green, white and gold for a Christmas table, or one in cream for a Scandinavian winter shelf. The zip carries every printed part, the cone master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

What you need

  • About 577 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 112 g of pillar wax per candle: each cast is 124 ml
  • Steel binder clips, tape or a hot glue gun
  • A primed wick about 120 mm long

How to cast it

  1. Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, and the two shell halves. No supports.

  2. Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and hold the seams shut with steel binder clips. The seats for them are built into the shell.

  3. Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.

  4. Mix 577 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.

  5. Once it has cured, unclip the shell, lift it off and peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.

  6. Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

Questions about this design

Can I make the ribbed cone candle in different sizes?

Yes. Open the master STL from the zip in the free silicone mold maker, scale it, and generate a new shell. A set of three cones at 70, 85 and 100 percent makes a nice little forest on a table.

Does the tip of the ribbed cone candle come out whole?

Yes, the tip is a rounded 8 mm knob, not a sharp point, so it fills and releases cleanly. Pour a little hotter, 75 to 80 C, so the wax reaches the tip before it starts to set.

Why does the ribbed cone mold use more silicone than the other shapes?

The shell follows the cone out to its wide base and keeps an even 10 mm wall all the way up, so a tall cone needs a tall shell. You mix it once, 577 ml, and the mold then casts candle after candle.
