Stacked stones candle mold

A 72 mm stacked stones candle, three smooth pebbles balanced on each other, as a silicone mold.

Candle wax Pro early access

A stacked stones candle 72 mm tall: three smooth pebbles of falling size balanced on each other, each turned a little, like a cairn on a beach.

Made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker. The waist between each pair of stones is an undercut a rigid mold would lock on, so print the base with the stack fused onto it and the two shell halves, pour about 182 ml of silicone, and cast in the flexible mold that comes out.

It suits a spa, a meditation corner or a bathroom shelf, and looks best cast in stone greys, sand and soft white. The zip carries every printed part, the stone master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file for the generator.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed mold parts pulled apart around the master, not a photo.

What you need

  • About 206 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 94 g of pillar wax per candle: each cast is 104 ml
  • Steel binder clips, tape or a hot glue gun
  • A primed wick about 110 mm long

How to cast it

  1. Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, and the two shell halves. No supports.
  2. Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and hold the seams shut with steel binder clips. The seats for them are built into the shell.
  3. Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.
  4. Mix 206 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.
  5. Once it has cured, unclip the shell, lift it off and peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.
  6. Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

Questions about this design

How do I make the stones look like real stone?

Marble the wax: pour a grey and a white batch into the same jug without stirring, then pour in one go. Or brush a little black mica into the seams between the stones once the candle is out, and buff the high points clean.

Will the stack burn evenly?

The wick runs straight down the middle of all three stones, so it burns down through the top stone first. Use a wick sized for the top stone's width, about 35 mm, so the pool does not tunnel into the stones below.

Can I cast the stacked stones in concrete as a decoration?

Yes. Concrete and Jesmonite both release from silicone, and a grey concrete cairn makes a good bookend or garden piece. Skip the wick and use a fine mix so it fills the waists.
