Twisted pillar candle mold

A 90 mm pillar with six lobes and a quarter turn of twist, as a silicone mold.

Candle wax Pro early access

A twisted pillar candle 90 mm tall and about 62 mm across: six rounded lobes that turn a quarter of the way round from base to top, so the light rolls across it as it burns.

Made with the hugging-shell mode of our silicone mold maker, the mode the site's own mold advisor recommends for a tall shape with undercuts all round. You print the base with the pillar fused onto it and a two-part shell, pour about 325 ml of silicone, and cast your candles in the flexible silicone that comes out. The twist would lock a rigid two-part mold; silicone just peels off it.

The zip carries every printed part, the pillar master as its own STL, the tool's own print-settings sheet and a recipe file that puts every setting back on the generator.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed parts and the candle, not a photo.

What you need

  • About 356 ml of silicone (mix it in one batch)
  • About 205 g of pillar wax per candle: each cast is 228 ml
  • Steel binder clips, tape or a hot glue gun
  • A primed wick for a 60 mm pillar

How to cast it

  1. Print the base, which has the master already fused onto it, and the two shell halves. No supports.
  2. Stand the shell halves on the base around the master and hold the seams shut with steel binder clips. The seats for them are built into the shell.
  3. Tape the outside seams or run a bead of hot glue along them, because silicone finds every gap.
  4. Mix 356 ml of silicone in one batch, pour it into the open top in a thin stream, and fill level with the rim.
  5. Once it has cured, unclip the shell, lift it off and peel the silicone off the master. That silicone is your mold.
  6. Set the silicone back in the shell to keep its shape, and cast into it through the opening the base left.

Questions about this design

Why not a printed two-part mold?

The lobes twist, so any flat split through the pillar has lobes curling into both halves. A rigid half cannot slide off a twist; silicone flexes off it. The site's mold advisor scores the rigid option 40 out of 100 here and the hugging shell 98.

How much silicone does the twisted pillar need?

About 325 ml, so mix 356 ml in one batch. The exact figures are in the tool's print-settings sheet inside the zip.

Can I make it taller?

Scale the master STL and upload it to the silicone mold maker in hugging-shell mode, or drop the recipe file from the zip onto the page with it to start from these settings.
