Candle wax Pro early access

A printed tray for four wax melt snap bars, each 72 x 48 mm and 16 mm deep: six 22 mm cubes joined at the back by a thin web, with a V-groove between them so a customer can snap off one cube at a time.

Made with our tray mold generator in its rigid tray mode: you print the tray and pour wax straight into it, no silicone step. Every wall of the cavity is drafted and the snap grooves are V-shaped, which is what lets a set bar lift out of a rigid tray.

The zip carries the tray exactly as the tool exported it, one snap bar on its own as an STL, the master uploaded to the tool, and a print and pour sheet with the volume of each cavity.

Shown as a 3D render of the printed tray with three lilac snap bars in front, not a photo.

What you need

  • A PETG print of the tray
  • Wax melt blend and fragrance oil, about 53 ml per snap bar
  • A heat-proof jug for pouring

How to cast it

  1. Print the tray as exported, cavities up, no supports. Use PETG: wax goes in at 60 to 75 C and PLA starts to soften around 60 C.
  2. Set the tray on a level surface. Melt the wax, stir in the fragrance at the temperature the supplier gives, and pour each cavity to the brim.
  3. Let the wax set at room temperature, then put the tray in the fridge for 15 minutes: the wax shrinks off the walls.
  4. Turn the tray over above a towel and press gently on the back of each cavity. The pieces drop out.

Questions about this design

How do I stop a snap bar breaking in the wrong place?

Pour the web full: the bar breaks along the V-grooves only if the web behind them is the thinnest part. Top the tray up to the brim after the first shrink, so the back of the bar is a flat, even slab.

Why is the snap bar tray printed rather than cast in silicone?

A snap bar is a block with straight, drafted sides and no curves to wrap round, so it lifts out of a rigid tray cleanly. That saves you the silicone and the curing day, and the tray is ready the moment the print finishes.

How much fragrance does a snap bar hold?

Most wax melt blends take 6 to 10% fragrance oil by weight; at about 53 ml per bar that is roughly 3 to 5 g of oil. Weigh it rather than counting drops, so every batch smells the same.
